ALADI: from the social creativity to our´s people´s liberation

Abstract

In 1978 , a group of Latin American meeting in Mexico agreed to the idea of creating ALADI: Latin-American Association of Industrial Design. With a discourse of cultural claims grounded in relationship design - technology - dependency, its founders intended to put up against those who would deny to Latin America can configure its own reality (Pamio, 1981), rather than setting up a framework for occupational control of a young discipline in the region. With an accurate perspective on the promotion of the ideals of Industrial Design as a vehicle for the achievement of economic, social and cultural development of the region, and as a solution to the fundamental needs of "our people", the ALADI was established in Bogotá in 1980 and ran until 1995 with particular political vision and apparently did not remain as guiding its existence after this date, under a scheme towards the different members for successive periods.The main countries involved in the process, and as far as we know so far, the most active promoters of ALADI were Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Cuba and Argentina, the first four, including hosting the first boards, while Argentina participated as an active member of all the meetings that shaped the ALADI.For reasons that I set in the research, the operation of ALADI diluted politically and representatively time since 1995, leaving the history of industrial design the trail of a body associated with that for 15 years (economic and moral crisis in the region) met the job 11 or more countries around the problems of development from the perspective of Industrial Design. Today, in the Latin American's movements and events that point to an awakening of the regional integration of the principles of design, and in this way - making an apology Marc Bloch (2002) - this story has some echoes current and is an important referent that determines even without much clarity, our present actions.Given the nature of the process, the sources of fundamental research will be structured interviews with key actors in shaping, foundation and functioning of the association from the methods of oral history. Also, the project will build a collection of different documents written, photographic and visual, left by the process: minutes, communications, articles published in newspapers of national associations and journals, lectures in different conferences , congresses visual projects, etc., will be part of the documentary series and analytical research.
