Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the mechanics of the internal political processes of the Federal Reserve System and its interaction with the U.S. Department of Treasury at the height of 2008-09 global financial crisis and the deadlock concerning the debt ceiling raise on 2011. Based on the discussions regarding the political perspectives of the monetary international relations, this study expects to comprehend how the American government organized itself internally in order to employ huge efforts in the economic area confronting two cases of extreme instability. The hypothesis under investigation by this work is that the relations between these two institutions was only possible once they perceived that the international position of the dollar was at risk. That´s because both episodes illustrated the vulnerability of the international monetary system, raising doubts about the capacity of the United States in leading, coordinating, and applying the necessary actions to guarantee the stability of this system.
