A dental pre-sessional video effect for teaching behavior strategies management in pediatric dentistry

Abstract

The dentist formation shouldn't be restricted only to the technical learning from a specific area, but also, the adequate training to deal with the patient´s behavior difficulties. To acknowledge of the patient´s psychosocial needs and managing non-cooperative behaviors should be part of the dentist´s professional formation. However, the current teaching system in Dentistry usually doesn´t provide or value adequate means of learning and assessing behavior management skills. The aim of the present study is to verify if the presentation of a video with the use of three behavior management strategies affects the student´s behavior pattern and the professional-patient relationship, in the subsequent session. Initially 4 pediatric dentistry students will participate in this study, being 2 students from the third year, and two students from the fourth year. Sixteen dental treatment sessions from each student will be observed. In each session will occur the treatment of one child. In every session, the researcher will observe the patient´s cooperation or non-cooperation when using behavior management strategies. The sessions 1 to 3 will be of baseline, the sessions 4 to 6 will be destined to the application of the pre-session video. The sessions 7 to 9 will be of observation without intervention, so that it is possible to verify if, without the video presentation, the student goes back to the behavior presented in baseline, or if the student shows learned behavior from the video. Sessions 9 to 12 will be of pre-session video application, and sessions 12 to 15 will be of observation without intervention. A Follow-up session will be accomplished, with observation without intervention, after 3 months. In total there will be, initially, 64 sessions of data to be analyzed. The researcher will directly observe each dental treatment session, to verify if there are behavior management strategies being used by the students. The researcher will also observe the patients cooperation or non-cooperation with the use of behavior management strategies. For that, the Event Sampling registration technique will be used. The data registration and results presentation will be accomplished with Excel program, using tables and graphics. (AU)
