Abstract

The research project on Environment and development: the construction of the environmental debate in The UNESCO Courier (1972-1992) seeks to understand the debate that The Courier UNESCO holds regarding environment and development issues, since the Organization United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization - UNESCO acts as a promoter of environmental policy debate, mediating and at times formulating international policies on the environment. We note that over the last four decades of the twentieth century, the formulation of the environmental issue has emerged as a cause and symptom of a state of mind marked by questioning the effectiveness of the development, particularly on the modalities of economic growth and the uses of natural resources. Thus revealing a process of temporal and conceptual review of human actions on nature which embodies the inconclusiveness of the debate on environment and development. The project speaks to the emphasis of the Environmental History of the dynamics of appropriation/transformation/destruction of the natural world over time, particularly with the realization of this process as increasingly impacting the organization of contemporary society. Thus, the discussions forwarded by the magazine The UNESCO Courier are problematized the perspective of building visions at different scales on this process, since the articles and interviews that are steeped holds by interests and historical aspects of various nationalities. We believe that understanding the debate built around the themes of environment and development contributes to the reinvention of society, since it is relevant to the process of elaboration of public policies that promote sustainability, questioning the market action in the search for patterns and economically sustainable approach to environmental issues in education.
