Abstract

The research aims to study practices of imprisonment of women offenders in the state of São Paulo, over the years 1942 to 1977. Focused on prisonal institutes for women - Women's Prison, in the capital city and Female Penitentiary St. Maria Eufrásia de Pellletier, in the countryside - we aim to present an overview on the work of these institutions, identifying its prison population, as well as strategies of action of its management, performed by a religious catholic entity. The Congregation of the Good Shepherd D'Angers was responsible for dealing directly with the women prisoners into female prison of maximum security in São Paulo state since it opened, in 1940, until 1977, when, the first non-religious, Suraia Daher took over the administration of Female Penitentiary of Capital. We paid special attention on the varied and numerous sources of legislation, such as bills, amendments, speeches and pronouncements, resources, requests, commissions, reports, among others. Without disregarding, either, visual sources, interviews and testimonials. Two approaches are adopted by us: a punctual character, highlighting a more immediate and specific documentation, analyzing internal sources present in the discourse, and other relational character, confronting broader sources and highlighting the types of relationships that can be established between different documents.
