Abstract

The aim of this project is to describe and to analyze (a) laboratory artifacts; and (b) conducted research at the neurophysiology laboratory of the Argentinian physician Miguel Rolando Covian. The laboratory was created in the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) at the Ribeirão Preto campus and it was connected with the development of the Medicine School (FMRP-USP) of this University. The time period studied in this work will cover the years from 1955 to 1974, period of time when Covian was head of the FMRP-USP's Physiology Department. Previous researches on his work in the University have pointed out his humanistic proposals to the medical training. Those studies emphasize his philosophical and psychological ideas for that training. Those two aspects have been observed in the Brazilian context of that period marked by the debate about the training of Brazilian scientists and the expansions of the university system. This particular project is linked to the previous studies about Covian and it highlights the influence of the scientific laboratory on his work. Some of the sources, such as laboratory apparatus and letters, are archived at the Museu Histórico of the FMRP-USP. There are also digital sources available, for instance, at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). This research can contribute to the history of psychology and the history of medicine in Brazil. It also gives information about agents and institutions important for those fields; moreover it reveals new relations between these sciences in the country.
