Abstract

This research project examines the transformation of election funding and the evolution of representative government in Brazil, and aims to contribute the increasingly intense debate surrounding the influence of resources in Brazilian political campaigns. Specifically, it will expand the scope of temporal analysis to account for changes in the political strategies of the political elite. The project is based on the legislative debates in four important moments in political history. For each case, I will examine changes in spending as well as elites´ strategies to maintain or gain access to elected positions. Using a methodology that emphasizes the importance of time sequences, I will analyze how the elite deal with the impacts and dilemmas of these transformations. (AU)
