Abstract

The horses are often affected by skin neoplasms of mesenchymal origin. Among these, the equine sarcoid is the most prevalent and is characterized morphologically as a fibroblastic tumor with epidermal and dermal involvement. Its features allow the identification of six clinical types, verrucous type, mixed, malignant, nodular, the occult, the fibroblast and mixed. In cellular, physiological and pathological processes, certain enzymes such as metalloproteinases, plays an important role in extracellular matrix degradation, and if not balanced, are related to diseases, such as tumors, contributing to tumor invasion. Still, in tumor tissue, the fibroblast differentiates into myofibroblasts, with retractable action. Both metalloproteinases as myofibroblasts are present in equine sarcoid and have prognostic values for malignancy were evaluated by immunohistochemical markers. Another important component of the tumor is collagen. Collagen plays a vital role in maintaining the structural integrity and to determine tissue function , hence methods to detect, quantify and assess collagen are valuable. To evaluate, it requires a call Picrosirius red staining (Sirius red F3BA) as it reacts with collagen and also increases its birefringence under polarized microscopy observation. The evaluation of sarcoid compared the amount of MMP, myofibroblasts and collagen type and aims to try to correlate these items with the biological behavior of the neoplasm. (AU)
