Abstract

The VIM - vortex-induced motions phenomenon is a particular way to call VIV - vortex-induced vibrations. VIM occurs in offshore platforms due to current incidence. Motions in the transverse direction are in the same order of the platform main dimension. These large amplitudes in the horizontal plane are responsible to decrease the fatigue life of the mooring and riser systems, therefore VIM must be consider in the initial design phases. The classification rules that talk about VIM do not come the simultaneous wave effects; the rules consider the effect of wave and current separately. This fact can increase the effect cost of the project and make the project unfeasible. The aim of the research program is to understand the behavior of oil platforms under the action of VIM and simultaneous wave incidence. In this way, critical analysis of the classification rules will be performed, as well as a new approach to consider these phenomena in the initial design phases. Experimental VIM database will be used to achieve the goal.
