Abstract

The main objective of this research proposal is to understand the working principle of standing waves piezoelectric motors. Initially, a commercial piezoelectric motor will be analyzed. Basically, this motor consists of a stator with a piezoelectric ceramic, and a rotor. When the piezoelectric ceramic is excited by a sinusoidal electric signal, an elliptical movement is produced at the stator end tip, which induces a rotation of the rotor. Due to particular characteristics of this motor, the rotor can rotate in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. During the project execution, the Finite Element Method will be applied in order to study the vibration behavior of the stator, and an experimental characterization of the piezoelectric motor will be performed. The experimental characterization will be done by using an electrical impedance analyzer to measure the electrical impedance curve of the stator and a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) will be used to measure the displacement amplitude of the stator end tip. In the last stages of the project execution, a piezoelectric prototype should be fabricated.
