Abstract The mental imagery and the visual memory have been considered as distinct components in the coding of information and associated with different processes of working memory. Experimental evidences show, for example, that the performance in memory tasks based on the generation of mental images (visual imagery) suffers the interference from dynamic visual noise (DVN), but the same effect isn't observed in visual memory tasks basead in visual perception (visual memory) . Although several evidences show that tasks of imagination and visual memory are based on different cognitive processes, we can not rule out that common processes are involved and that some experimental results which show differences between the two tasks are resulted from methodological differences between the paradigms used to study them. Thus, in this study we attempted to equate the tasks of imagination and visual memory to analyze the cognitive mechanisms during the retrieval phase of visual information, comparing the effects of an irrelevant visual stimulation on the performance in visual memory tasks with retro-cue and in tasks of generation of mental images.
