Abstract There is consensus in the literature that exercise improves quality of life and functional capacity of patients with heart failure (HF) with reduced or preserved ejection fraction (LVEF). However, the results are controversial regarding factors associated with these beneficial effects. In fact, the beneficial effects of exercise are not due to improvement in LVEF. On the other hand, some studies have pointed the beneficial effects of physical activity on diastolic function. Given the importance of LV filling pressure in patients with symptoms of HF, it is suspected that the benefits of exercise in these patients is associated with better LV diastolic performance. Objectives: To evaluate the combined effect of physical exercise on diastolic function in patients with HF and reduced LVEF and investigate whether the improvement in diastolic function is an important factor in improving symptoms, functional capacity and quality of life of these patients. Methodology: A prospective longitudinal will be performed in patients with HF and a LVEF less than 50%. Two groups are matched by age and sex. Intervention group: patients who underwent 12 weeks of combined and supervised exercise, 3 times per week. The control group did not undergo the practice of supervised exercise. Both groups will undergo echocardiography before and after the protocol, walk test, quality of life questionnaire and holter monitoring. Statistical analysis of repeated measures ANOVA will be performed to compare the clinical and ultrasound before and after the intervention. For comparison between groups will be held t test and simple linear regression. Expected Results: We hope to find improvement in diastolic function in patients undergoing exercise program and it is suspected that this is a determining factor in the improvement of quality of life, functional capacity and symptoms in patients with HF and reduced LVEF. | |
