Abstract

Mortality in youth occurs mostly by external causes, unnatural, violently and in specific geographical, racial and gender distribution. Among the external causes, homicides by firearms are responsible for approximately half of all deaths. Maps of Violence show that from 1970 to 2010 every three fatal victims of firearms, two were young, 93.9 % were male and 2.3 more black people were killed compared with white murder victims. According to the data the most directly affected are young black male residents of urban peripheries. The objective of this study is to investigate, through case study, the physical, emotional, economic and social effects of young deaths in survivor's lives in the city of São Paulo. Mothers, brothers, relatives, friends and neighbors, community leaders, professionals who provide care and/or assistance to family members and the community, reporters, and people who contacted the news through media are all intertwined in the same web of meaning that permeates lives of survivors, the hidden or indirect victims of wide open deaths: not numerically revealed by the statistics, but affected by extreme violence, without possibility of protection or preparation. Two cases of young people killed on the same date on the southern outskirts of São Paulo city were chosen. As a procedure, participant observation was held at the Forum in Defense of Life, the March for Peace and Public Hearings, establishing contact with professionals working there, social movements and leaders have indicated relatives of the victims engaged in the fight against violence. The fact that family members chosen were involved in social movements was an ethical care to avoid causing additional suffering, since they were pre-disposed to give their testimonies. Qualitative approach was adopted for the collection and treatment of the material obtained using interviews as a tool. This research aims to bring narrative to qualify public policies that prevent violence, establishes a culture of peace through promoting citizenship, and appreciation of life and change the current paradigm.
