Abstract Within the cloud computing paradigm, providers offer services and computational infrastructure to their users on demand in a pay-per-use model. Data centers form the computational clouds and are able to work in a coordinated way, in many different geographically regions, and are also able to support thousands of servers. All the data center infrastructure accounts for a high energy consumption, leading to economic and environmental problems. The future trend is to increase this consumption, causing even greater impact. However, much of this energy is ineffectively used, making it possible to develop better strategies for improving the use of the equipments and, as a consequence, reducing the energy consumption in data centers. The goal of this work is to propose an approach to energy-aware load balancing in geographically distributed data centers. An strategy to reduce the energy consumption in each data center will also be proposed, based on a virtual machine placement, that will take the data center topology into account. Having proposed that, an strategy for load balancing amongst data centers will be proposed. | |
