Abstract

Study and practice of design, building, use and disposal of computers and associated systems with minimal impact to the environment have been a major focus in computing. These studies and practices are called Green Computing. As a consequence of the proliferation of devices with low processing power and increasing need for elastic computing, it has increasingly been common the need to use Cloud Computing. The clouds, arranged in data centers all over the world, are normally used as a utility service for users who have such devices or require such computation. Indeed the data centers have quickly expanded and a consequence is the increasing energy consumption and pollution. This paper proposes a scheduling algorithm for computing Cloud applying Green Computing concepts, using existing technologies in order to minimize energy consumption and emissions. Using a Distributed Power Management, a statistical analysis of the historic of virtual machines demand is performed, optimizing the number of turning on physical machines to supply the cloud's needs in differents instants. For a scenario where there are machines that cannot be turned off, this project proposes a method of workload distribution designed as a hybrid solution based on dynamic voltage scaling and active cooling control, where the energy consumption is not only reduced by the processor, but also by the cooling system. The algorithm also addresses quality of service, giving priority to critical operations and running then even if it means higher energy consumption.
