Abstract

Cloud computing provides utility computing (software and hardware) according to user needs, which is billed through the "pay-per-use" basis. Customers can generally make use of the cloud as a software (SaaS), platform (PaaS), or infrastructure (IaaS) providers. The cloud computing is gradually being used by the IT industries and universities to execute workflows, a set of services to be processed in a well defined order. Complex applications in e-Science and e-Business modeled as workflows are executed in clouds in order to minimize investment in computing infrastructure. Thus, due to the lack of own resources, customers use workflow execution services provided by SaaS and PaaS providers. However, these services schedule workflows sequentially, that is, one workflow at a time. On the other hand, due to the high demand of customer requests, the SaaS/PaaS provider should execute (and manage) multiple workflows at the same time. The area of scheduling multiple workflows in clouds, however, lacks this type of algorithm. To deal with these challenges, this research proposes the study and development of scheduling algorithms in order to execute multiple workflows in clouds. We consider a SaaS provider with two-levels of SLA, where one is destined to SLAs established with its customers, while another level includes SLAs signed with IaaS providers. Therefore, through the proposed scheduling algorithm of multiple workflows proposed, we intend that the SaaS provider (i) meets the QoS requirements of each workflow, (ii) minimizes SLAs violations with their custumers and (iii) maximizes their profit.
