Abstract

To improve health in elderly subjects the ACSM recommend the performance of concurrent training (CT). However CT can impair the hypertrophic response compared to isolated resistance training (RT), a process dubbed interference effect. In elderly subjects there are mainly loss of type II fibers. Nevertheless, no study until the present moment showed the exact mechanisms to explain this phenomenon in elderly. Recently, some studies have shown that molecular signaling responses can be the key to clarify the interference effect. Skeletal muscle from strength- and endurance-trained individuals represents diverse adaptive states. In this sense, AMPK-PGC-1± signaling mediates several adaptations to endurance training (ET), while up-regulation of the Akt-TSC2-mTOR pathway may underlie increased protein synthesis after RT. Considering that AMPK phosphorylation can attenuates Akt-mTOR phosphorylation, we aimed to examine the molecular signaling responses after 12 weeks of CT in elderly. (AU)
