Abstract

In the work here projected, it is proposed a research about the changes in the administration of the Christian churches in the Roman province of Asia in the period between 70 and 170 C.E., having by central basis of the research the letters of Ignatius of Antioch sent to some of these communities around of the year 110 C.E., but also using other fundamental sources of this period, like Irenaeus of Lyons, Hegesippus, Papias of Hierapolis, Polycarp of Smyrna, New Testament, apochryphal and non-Christian documents. The central problem of the research shall be as follows: what are the historical conditions that make possible the ascension in the region cited of a monepiscopate differentiated of the group of presbyters, diverging on the administrative organization of a college of bishops, a striking feature of the Mediterranean Christian communities (including those of the Roman province of Asia) in the most part of the first century C.E., and what is the role (if there's any) of Ignatius of Antioch in this process?
