Abstract

The management of sludge from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is an activity of great complexity and high cost, which if poorly executed, can undermine the environmental benefits expected from this system and health. It is estimated that the sludge production in Brazil is between 150-220 thousand tons per year. As the main objective of sludge treatment is to make a more stable and lower-volume product for easier handling and thus reduce the costs of subsequent processes, such as transportation, disposal, among others. In this respect there is a constant quest for knowledge and new technologies to achieve an increasingly desirable result. This research aims to study alternative and simplified procedures for sludge drying: drying by forced air convection, thermal drying by infrared lamps and both acting jointly - through the control parameters involved (energy use up, physical characteristics, drying efficiency).
