Abstract

Our main thesis project "From the inland sea to the continental country: continuities and ruptures in the application of the 'vidalian-mediterranean' method in the Brazil of Pierre Monbeig (1930-1985)" aims to trace the exchange of geographic knowledge between Brazil and France in the first half of the twentieth century. This exam will be done through the study of French geographer Pierre Monbeig (1908-1987), in terms of circulation of ideas and methodological constitution of Geography in confronting different 'spaces' (Europe, Mediterranean and Brazil). As part of this doctoral investigation, it is essential realize a theoretical and empirical study, not only the fundamental ideas of Pierre Monbeig, but also the socio- historical conditions of its intellectual activity. The objective that we propose for the project, which will be research abroad, at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, aims to establish the conditions for collecting data on the social and institutional context in which fits Pierre Monbeig. An additional objective is to participate in doctoral seminars on the methodology of the history of geography and to read about complementary bibliography. (AU)
