Abstract

This request to hold a Research Internships Abroad (Bolsa Estágio dePesquisa no Exterior - BEPE) is linked to FAPESP 04019-8/2013 project whosemain objective is to analyze the centralization of capital in the Brazilian sugarcaneindustry and its implications for the political economy of the city (SANTOS, 2009) ofPiracicaba [São Paulo (SP), Brazil]. The current global crisis of capital - which has itsorigins already in the 1970s (HARVEY, 2011) - generated a financialization andcapital accumulation by certain actors who have promoted processes ofconcentration and centralization of capital, with strong impacts on urban economiesaround the world (SMITH, Neil. 1988). In this sense, this research project abroadaims to carry out a theoretical study on the processes of crisis, financialization andcentralization of capital by means of literature, reading texts, participation in researchseminars and conducting courses in post-graduation at The Graduate Center of theCity University of New York (CUNY), in the second half of 2014. For decades, thatinstitution is a reference in discussions of the above topics from importantcontributions of its professors as: Cindi Katz, Ruth Gilmore, David Harvey and otherstudents and researchers.
