Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the biomechanical effects of Mulligan's Mobilisation-with-Movement (MWM) and tape in patients with chronic musculoskeletal shoulder pain. This project will be the first study looking at the effect of combining MWM and tape, which has previously demonstrated superior improvements in range of motions compared to sham and control interventions. The aim of the research project is to investigate the hypothesis that the application of a glenohumeral joint MWM corrects a joint positional fault. In this instance the population will be participants with shoulder pain that limits function. They will have pre and post-intervention measures of pain, ROM and humeral head translation in relation to the glenoid. The results of this study will contribute to our understanding of the positional fault hypothesis as mechanism for success in this technique. The project is designed as a pre- post application measure of humeral head position using a 3D electromagnetic tracking device, to investigate the amount of translation that may occur in all axes of movement of the glenohumeral joint. To date no scientific study has been conducted to investigate the possible mechanical effect of this technique in the shoulder. (AU)
