Abstract The treatment of winery wastewater is one of the main environmental impacts in Spain and in Brazil because of the quantity and the qualitative aspects of the effluent: high biodegradable loads (up to 10 g L-1), low pH and recalcitrant pollutants. Several biological treatment technologies have been investigated for the winery wastewaters treatment; however microbial fuel cells (MFC) have not been used so far. The MFC have attracted global attention for the ability to treat wastewater and generate electrical power through bio-electrochemical reactions. The novelty of this study consists in treating winery wastewater using an up-flow membrane-less MFC. First, winery wastewater will be characterized. Afterwards, an up-flow membrane-less MFC will be inoculated with sludge from an activated sludge from the Ciudad Real Wastewater Treatment Plant and kept without aeration during five days to develop an anaerobic microbial community. During the operation, physical-chemical analyses and electrical performance are going to be conducted to assess the system. This study will provide information about the feasibility of using an up-flow membrane-less MFC and also the effect of hydraulic retention time to treat winery wastewater and generate power. In this way this project also aims at establishing research's training at a Spanish university contributing to international Brazilian science insertion. (AU) | |
