Abstract

Root water uptake modeling is essential to estimate the transpiration rates as well as to understand the water dynamics between plants and atmosphere. However, despite the importance of root water uptake processes, their interactions are not completely understood. One of the bottlenecks is the modeling of multi-species agro - or ecosystems. The objective of this doctoral internship project is to obtain training in modeling of multispecies ecosystems. The proposal intends to integrate simulations from hydrological and ecological models. The hydrological model to be used is SWAP, with emphasis on its option of coupled simultaneous runs, with its routines parameterized with primary field data and with outputs provided by the ecological model. The ecological model to be used will be selected using criteria including model data requirements, simulated scale and adaptability to the Caatinga scenario. Both models, hydrological and ecological, were developed at Wageningen University, and the internship under the supervision of a highly qualified researcher from this institution will highly benefit the project. The main outcomes expected from the internship are the parameterization of the SWAP hydrological model and ecological competition model for multispecies scenarios referring to the Caatinga biome.
