Abstract

This project proposes a thesis about caricatures that built slavery and/or the figure of the slave, present in the magazine Semana Ilustrada, directed by the prussian Henrique Fleiuss. The magazine circulated in Rio de Janeiro between 1860 and 1876 and is a pioneer considering the use of images in the press. The new technologies associated with the demand for images, urged the emergence and subsequent consolidation of the illustrated press. The invention and popularization of photography evidencied a society avid for pictures and in process of transformation and development of a visual education. In this research, we intend to establish a reflection on the images found in Semana Ilustrada that refer to slavery or the slave in order to understand the vision over the slaves in the society of Rio de Janeiro in the second half of the nineteenth-century. The brazilian context is peculiar, because we had a society that pretended to be modern, but still lived with a large contingent of slave labor. By studying these images we discover the visual culture of a symbolic time for Brazil. (AU)
