Abstract

This project presents research to be conducted as part of an international internship scholarship; the proposed activities are related to parts of a master of science research entitled "Assessment tool for thermal performance of social house: envelope considerations" (FAPESP process n. 2013/16628-9) that will be performed at North Carolina State University (NCSU), Raleigh, NC. The proposed study addresses the potential for conducting building performance simulation (BPS) during the early design stages of social housing. With the creation of a set of regression models (meta-models), this research aims to promote and simplify BPS use in the design process. The meta-models can be used as a tool to provide decision support to designers by allowing a rapid feedback about the influence of the early design decisions on building's thermal performance. The methodology to be developed at NCSU consists of: (a) determine from a previous list the design parameters that have to be considered; this discussion will be based on a Brazilian social housing project database (created during the first year of the master research's development); (b) define the input data for the parametric simulations that will be used to create and test the meta-models; (c) perform the thermal performance simulations using Energy Plus; (d) use a portion of the data from the simulation results to develop the regression models; (e) use the remaining data to test the meta-models; and (f) apply the meta-models with search algorithms to identify good combinations of design parameter values that optimize thermal performance.
