Abstract This research project considers the development of an optimization model for the unit commitment problem of hydro-thermal power systems (HTUC). In the first part of the project a hydroelectric unit commitment (HUC) model solved by semidefinite programming (SDP) was developed at University of Campinas (UNICAMP). In the second part, during the collaborative split Ph.D. at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), a thermoelectric unit commitment (TUC) model with security constraints will be integrated with the HUC model into a HTUC model with solution by SDP. A mixed-integer quadratically-constrained quadratic problem (MIQCQP) for mulation will be used to successively approximate the optimal solution by convex SDP relaxations in a branch-and-bound (B&B) algorithm framework. Primal-dual interior-points methods will be used to solve the resulting SDP problems. Finally, different heuristic strategies will be evaluated in order to improve computational time of the solution technique in large-scale problem instances. | |
