Abstract

This research project will investigate the work of the Sixth Generation of Chinese cinema from the point of view of its realist aesthetics. The main focus will be on the specificity of its realist impulse in relation to Chinese cinema in general and also in relation to current realist trends in world cinema, thus bringing a transnational perspective to the study of a national cinema. During the course of the research a selected number of films will be analysed in more detail, all of which have been made outside the studio system. These films have become emblematic of the recent changes in Chinese cinema, and are intrinsically related to the intense transformations in the country as a whole.
