Abstract

The efforts to achieve a viable nuclear fusion reactor for electrical energy generation are directed towards an efficient plasma confinement in tokamaks. However, the particle transport due the turbulence on the plasma edge limits the plasma confinement. So the investigation on the nature of this turbulence is needed in order to improve the plasma confinement.In this work, we study the plasma turbulence in the Texas Helimak (Texas University, Austin). The plasma in this machine have physical properties that are similar to the edge and external region of the plasma in tokamaks, and this machine has a great number of Langmuir probes to measure plasma fluctuations. We investigate the turbulence perturbed by an electrostatic potential imposed in plates present inside the machine. This investigation involve a variety of approaches, such as the statistical analysis of the plasma fluctuations, the study of the oscillation modes present in the plasma and non-linear analysis techniques. We also propose to obtain equilibrium distributions of the plasma fluctuations by using invariant partitions of the phase space. Complementary, we characterize the main properties of the extreme events in the plasma density fluctuations. We also apply these techniques to analyze the turbulence experiments from the TCABR tokamak, from the Physics Institute of the São Paulo University. (AU)
