Abstract

Rhodolith are free-living nodules composed by more than 50% of crustose coralline algae algae, when occur in large concentration over sea bottom they form the so-called rhodolith beds. Because their three-dimensional structure, rhodoliths are habitats for many benthic organisms. The transport of these nodules can occur through physical (e.g.; storms and tides) and/or by biological process (e.g.; transport by the fish Malacanthus plumieri). Taking in account the occurrence of M. plumieri from the Brazilian southern to the North Carolina, USA, there is an overlap in their distribution with rhodolith beds along the Brazilian coast. This species use rhodoliths to construct mounds that constitute their burrows and thus, they likely contribute to the dynamics of the associated communities with rhodolith beds. Here, we pretends to test the role of the fish M. plumieri to the structure and dynamics of associated communities with rhodolith beds from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago. (AU)
