Abstract

The intake of energy drinks (with caffeine) simultaneously with the consumption of alcoholic beverages increases the risk of alcohol abuse and dependence, as it is associated with increased alcohol consumption both in quantity and frequency. The risks of this harmful intake and also the false perception that caffeine decrease the harmful effects of alcohol expose the youth and society to greater risks. Although the cerebellum constitutes only 10% of the total volume of the brain, contains more than half of all CNS neurons. Acts as coordinator of the motor part of cognition, development, and psychological disorders, possessing the thalamic connections to many brain areas relevant to these proceedings. There is a vast literature showing cerebellar lesions resulting from postnatal consumption of alcohol, but studies of the impact of alcohol on the adult are less frequent. On the other hand simultaneous analysis of the effects of ethanol and caffeine on cerebellar neurons are rare. (AU)
