Abstract

The inflammatory process associated with colic in horses has often the local manifestation, and also alterations involving distant organs to lesion focus. Among the systems involved, the cardiovascular has been little studied. Therefore, the aim of this proposal to study in greater depth the systemic inflammatory response, oxidative stress and metalloproteinases changes in horses submitted to small colon distension, as well as evaluating the biomarkers of cardiac injury response. The analysis will be performed on blood and peritoneal fluid samples harvested at different times of surgical procedures performed in previous experiments (FAPESP 2009/07284-9 and the FAPESP 2010/15046-8). The inflammatory response is evaluated by determining the cytokine IL- 1², IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF- ±, as well as metalloproteinase -2 and -9 (MMP-2 and MMP-9); oxidative stress is assessed by determination of malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein product (AOPP), vitamin A, vitamin E and glutathione (GSH); and lesions of the myocardium will be evaluated by determinations of troponin I, C-reactive protein and creatine kinase isoform MB (CK-MB). The peritoneal fluid is also analyzed for the presence of MMP-2 and MMP-9. Data are submitted to a normality test and then analysis using One-Way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test. For all analyzes the significance level of p<0.05 will be established. (AU)
