Influence of different surfactant agents on the acquired pellicle formation on bovine enamel

Abstract

Dental erosion is a multifactorial process involving dental demineralization by the chemical action of extrinsic or intrinsic acids. The acquired pellicle is a biofilm, bacteria free, covering the solid oral tissues and acts as a diffusion barrier or selective permeable membrane, preventing the direct contact of acid with the tooth surface. Dentifrices, normally used in the control of oral biofilms have detergents (surfactants) that may influence the adsorption of salivary proteins by changing the surface energy of enamel and may act directly on the formation of the acquired pellicle. Thus, it is advisable to check the influence of detergents found in toothpastes in the formation of acquired pellicle in bovine dental enamel. Three detergents ( Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Polysorbate 20 and Cocamidopropyl Betaine) will be tested in two concentrations (1.0 % and 1.5 %). Polished bovine enamel specimens are prepared and subjected to the surface treatment with the different detergents. The attainment of salivary proteins adsorbed to the surface film forming is performed acquired by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR ). The data will be tested for normality and homoscedasticity tests and, from these, the appropriate statistical analysis will be given. The level of significance will be 5%.
