Abstract

The project proposes to investigate the relationship between structure and properties of organic-inorganic hybrids of siloxane-methacrylate system prepared by sol-gel process. In addition to the structural changes in the hybrid matrix, as a ratio between the organic and inorganic phase, will be studied the effects of cerium (IV) doping in the formation of a hybrid network and as the anti-corrosive properties of the material. The response surface methodology (RSM) will be used as a tool to evaluate the effects of synthesis parameters, on structural characteristics and final properties of the material. Matrices considered most suitable, will be modified with different concentrations of cerium ions to study the formation of the hybrid phase and the relationship between structure and anti-corrosion efficiency of coatings used to protect metallic surfaces. The hybrids will be prepared from the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with the coupling agent 3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MPTS), and hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) with MPTS. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) , photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) , Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetry (TG) will be used to investigate the structural properties. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization measurements will be used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of coated samples after long-term exposure to salt and salt / acid environments.
