Abstract

Many typical herbaceous species of savanna formations are supposed to be shade intolerant, a fact that propitiate their extinction in typical cerrado areas where extensive successional changes increased the density of arboreal species. This study has the main aim to analyze functional leaf traits (specific leaf area and gas exchange parameters) in typical savanna herbaceous species appearing along a successional gradient in a cerrado area of São Paulo State. The results will provide a contribution to the knowledge of the functional adaptations of herbaceous savanna plants and its role in community structure of herbaceous plants in response to environmental changes.
