Abstract

The skin is constantly exposed to oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as H202, superoxide anion and singlet oxygen, which are involved in cancer, aging and various inflammatory disorders. Several studies clearly demonstrate protective effects of antioxidants when administered to cultured cells or applied to animals. However, it is valuable to consider the antioxidant capacity of the whole stratum corneum, even though the possible interactions with other biomolecules and baseline antioxidants content. Non-invasive imaging techniques have received increased attention in recent years. Our research group has applied biophysical and skin imaging techniques to evaluate efficacy and safety of cosmetic formulations and active ingredients. Despite of all published works, fundamental questions concerning to the role of antioxidants in inflammatory process remain unanswered. Thus the purposes of this study are to identify cutaneous indicators of inflammatory process, to develop a novel method to evaluate in vivo antioxidant activity and, to evaluate the in vivo antioxidant activity of Zn(II)-glycine among other antioxidants and its effects on inflammatory process. To achieve these aims it will be carried out biophysical and skin imaging assessments on skin forearm of volunteers whose skin inflammatory process was triggered and, catalase activity assay using tape stripping.
