Abstract

In Brazil, the packing industry had net revenues of R$ 51,8 billion in 2012, according to annual report of Brazilian Packaging Association,(ABRE, 2014). The importance of this segment has become extremely importance in recent decades starting to be used as an indicator of the health of the country fianaceira. In light of this, we note that much information has been provided to the public, but in a segmented manner. This project aims to centralize multiple data regarding the material, the production process and packaging printing so that they can be compared and analyzed in a systematic and easily understood by designers and design students; and micro and small business owners who need information on packaging for their products. To achieve this, it is foreseen an extensive field research in several commercial establishments such as supermarkets and department stores in order to raise examples of application of the materials. After that, visitations will be made to industries and printing that work with production of packaging in the city of São Paulo in order to get specific information about the production processes of materials. Once the data collection has been concluded, they will be treated and added to the bibliography that already exist for a simple, coherent and cohesive organization of data. This project will take place in parallel to the project in development by LabDesign in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism in the University of São Paulo, which main purpose is to support the design and technology disciplines of the undergraduate courses in Design, Architecture and Urbanism. This project received funding from the Provost's Office for Undergraduate Studies and is coordinated by Professor Denise Dantas, PhD, of design department in partnership with Materiali and Design, a project from Scuola del Design Politecnico di Milano project, coordinated by Professor Barbara Del Curto, PhD.The information on materials, their main features, their uses and manufacturing processes will be freely accessible to teachers, students and researchers on an open platform available on the website http://www.materialize.fau.usp.br from July 2014.
