Abstract The bacterial cellulose produced on the surface of the culture medium of the bacteria Gluconacetobacter xylinus will be used for the production of nanocelulose, in other words, cellulose crystallites of nanometric dimensions that in aqueous suspension can self-organize to form chiral nematic phases. The suspensions will be characterized as the possibility of control of the cholesteric pitch and therefore the pseudo-color observed. Films will be deposited on glass substrates by techniques "doctor-blade" for the formation of materials with different "pseudo-color" which are called in this way due to the absence of pigments. Colloidal suspensions and films containing lanthanide ions will be also prepared and their emission properties in the visible and infrared regions will be featured together with the properties of pseudo-color and iridescence due to self-organization.
