Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic and difficult disease to control and treat. Diabetic patients require changes in diverse aspects of their life. The individual's perception about their health-disease process interferes with treatment conditions and their evolution, and what we observe are quite high rates of non- adherence to treatment, varying from 36 to 94% of patients depending on the population studied. It is therefore necessary to study and understand the mental processes of diabetic individual so it can be offered an adequate approach during treatment. The scenario of collecting the data for this research will be the Department of Medicine of UFSCAR. Patients will be randomly chosen to participate in research, and they may accept or decline participation in the study, which will consist of semi-structured interviews to be recorded and analyzed by the technique of qualitative analysis in the Light of Psychoanalytic Theory. The research objective is to verify what are the psychological strategies (defense mechanisms) used by the patients to cope with the situation in which they find themselves. Hopefully, with this knowledge, a better approach can improve the treatment of individuals with Diabetes Mellitus.
