Abstract

Xerostomia is characterised as a subjective dry mouth feeling which can be a consequence of reducing or interrupting salivary gland function. This condition composes a complex exocrinopathy responsible for damaging salivary glands in Sjogren's syndrome (SS) and also in Lupus Erythematosus (LE). The pathogeny of xerostomia in both diseases remains unclear. For two years, our group performed a clinical-pathological investigation concerning basic differences of xerostomia in SS and LE, confirming the presence of significant complications in the referred salivary glands. The present research aims to further investigate these alterations, now comparing differences in salivary fluid and in the glandular tissue in SS and LE, attempting to correlate their morphology and biochemical composition. Basically this study will include histopathological analysis of minor salivary glands of SS and LE patients and correlate these results to dry mouth complaint in order to verify possible alterations in the excretory duct function. Furthermore, biochemical assays will be performed on salivary secretion collected from those patients and then the expression of its proteins will be interpreted through proteomic analysis. As a consequence of this study, our results might be able to contribute for a novel classification of xerostomia in distinct diseases, impacting on the therapeutic and on the diagnostic process.
