Abstract

This research aims on contributing with the studies of the rhythm in the pre-tonal polyphonic music, also called mensural music, through the analysis of four approaches that focus on this music. Each one of these approaches presents a different model for interpreting the compositional data of such music, even though all of them have been chosen because they present, even in broad terms, a greater proximity with the rhythmic component of mensural music. This work intends to develop a mapping followed by a theoretical and analytical study of these approaches, aiming for an organization of the processes based on their focus on the rhythm. Further analysis of this data will allow us to critically contrast the approaches amongst themselves, listing them according to the fundamental rhythmic aspects of pre-tonal music and determining points of contact and deviation between them, along with inferring how each one of them fits into the analysis of the mensural rhythm.
