Abstract

In this work, we propose the comparative study of the novels: Fogo Morto (1968), by José Lins do Rego (1901-1957) and Ilhéu de Contenda (1978), by Henrique Teixeira de Sousa (1919-2006). Both are considered projection works from the literary career of these authors, that have in common the thematic approach of the decadence and its incidences in the social plan. The authors converge in demonstrating through national themes the subject's relation to the world, and within their respective contexts, they illustrate an important moment of their societies, from which start to be tracings indices of modernization in space and the relations of production. Whereas, therefore, the common approach of such universes of tradition in crisis, the comparison aims to focus on its different aspects, elements that are behind the construction of the characters in these works, checking also the way in which are incorporated in the narrative tessitura itself. The focus of the research will fall on the role played by modernization in the two wefts for, finally, recognize individual and general elements that are relevant to the resizing of Cape Verdean and Brazilian society through literature.
