Abstract

The present research takes as analytical corpus two novels two novels that thematize the decadence in its relationship with the modernization process in Brazil and in Cabo Verde in the course of the 20th century. Thereby, we intend to analyse the novels Fogo morto (1943), by the Brazilian writer José Lins do Rego (1901- 1957); and Ilhéu de contenda (1978), by the Cape-verdean writer Henrique Teixeira de Sousa (1919-2006) in a comparative perspective. With this aim, the thesis explores the universe of intellectual relations in the interaction circuit created by the Portuguese language, conceiving it as a negotiating space, exchanges and cultural and literary transfers which was essential for the endorsement of cultural and literary relations between the modernist movements of each Atlantic margin. We intend to extract from the formal choices that permeate the treatment given by each author to decay – considered in its intrinsic and dense connection with the process of modernization and with the way which he was imagined in each society through their respective sociological interpretations –, the literary solutions presented for the construction of the theme and its implications on the final invoice of each novel.
