Abstract Refrigeration systems are of great importance due to their diversity of applications in industrial, commercial and residential areas and because they are large energy consumers, demanding projects and optimized operations to reduce costs and environmental impacts. Among them, refrigeration systems by steam injection using a flash tank have gained popularity in recent years due to the recent expansion of their applications. Studies of these systems in situations of transient operation, such as startups and shutdowns are important to define efficient control systems. Despite the experimental approach is the most direct and reliable to identify the difficulties in designing a control system so it is clearly also the most expensive and the most time consuming. For this reason it is necessary to develop models capable of simulating the dynamics of these systems, enabling a better understanding of their behavior. This research project aims to develop a model to adequately represent actual data of an experimental refrigeration system by steam injection steam using a flash tank operating in transient regimes startup, shutdown, frosting and defrosting. The model will be validated by comparing the theoretical data obtained with experimental data and literature data. The modeling and simulation will be carried out in the MATLAB ® software integrated with Simulink ® environment to match the algorithms and programs developed in this project, with some resources existing in those software. Thermodynamic and transport properties necessary for the simulations are obtained by equations programmed in MATLAB ® environment, which together with equations that represent the behavior of the system components will be exported to the SIMULINK ® blocks libraries to obtain the model of dynamic simulation.
