Abstract

Preliminary results of the associate doctorate project revealed for the first time the great morphological diversity of the pretarsus and associated structures in Cholevinae, indicating its potential value for higher-level classification of the subfamily, and for a better understanding of the evolution of this character system within the taxon. The analysis also revealed the presence of sensory and glandular structures in the tarsomere integument never described in the literature before. Recent computer-based 3D reconstructions of head anatomy have also provided interesting phylogenetic insights in several insect groups. However, this innovative technique is still restricted to few research teams working on insect morphology. The present proposal of training in Prof. Beutel´s Lab aims at investigating the largely unexplored character system of the pretarsus and the similarly understudied head anatomy using 3D models for the first time in leiodid beetles. This research plan will yield a substantial component of the present doctorate project and open avenues for the use of 3D reconstructions in insect morphology in Brazil. As an additional goal, we intend to analyze and document for the first time the sensory and glandular structures that we observed in the distal tarsomeres of Cholevinae. (AU)
