Abstract

This research project intends to map radical representations of domestic architecture in the interwar period, that deviate from ideas such as universality, rationality, objectivity, economy, and efficiency, dominant among modernist experiences in the field. As such, it proposes to examine some intersections between contemporary avant-garde housing proposals and major changes taken place in family, sexual and bodily devices. On the one hand, it thus returns to the modernistic articulation of habitat and society in order to reopen the debate around reproductive life. On the other hand, it aligns itself with certain historiographical approach, close to social and cultural history, to address the relationships between architecture's aesthetic, intellectual and civilizing agendas and shifts in metropolitan lifestyles. To this perspective, it focuses on residential projects and ideologies which seems dissonant in reference to representations of the modern habitat: either because they were designed for - and sometimes by - avant-garde artists or intellectuals, or because they were attentive to contemporary experiments in the field of sexuality, marital relations, cohabitation, family or solitary life. By reviewing certain canonical projects designed on the period, as well as influential moral and cultural ideals refereed to domesticity, the research is specifically targeted to subsidize the analysis of some Flavio de Carvalho's works and statements: from the standpoint both of their approach to avant-garde art, psychoanalysis and anthropology in the interwar period, and the innovations they perform in terms of the understanding of privacy, sociability, eroticism and morality.
