Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of different types of artificial aging on the surface gloss of composite resins. Material and Methods: Sixty cylinder specimens (CS), presenting 6mm in diameter and 1mm thick will be fabricated from each resin composite: Durafil (microparticled), Empress Direct (microhybrid), and Filtek Z350 (nanoparticle). The initial surface gloss reading will be performed with a gloss meter for flat and curve surface NOVOCURVE (Rhopoint TM, East Sussex, England). Specimens will be then divided into 3 groups according to the type of artificial aging to be submitted. Subgroups are as follows - T: thermocycling aging (5o and 55oC) - 15000 cycles will be performed and gloss will be assessed at 5000, 10000 and 15000 cycles; Subgroup M - mechanical aging - brushing: 30000 brushing cycles with gloss readings at 10000, 20000 and 30000 cycles; Subgroup C - chemical aging with ethanol: CS will be immersed in ethanol for 15 days, with gloss readings at 5, 10 and 15 of immersion; Subgroup L - light aging: CS will be submitted to 216h UV light, with reading at 72, 144 and 216h of light exposure. Data will be collected and submitted to statistical analysis with level of significance at 5%.
