Abstract

This Ph.D. project investigates XXI-century musical transit between São Paulo and New York. During this period, Broadway musicals started to be vastly replicated in Brazil, and original Brazilian musicals staged in São Paulo City have been produced using Broadway musical conventions as reference. The profusion of shows produced in São Paulo using New York references and the consequent agency of these pieces allow a rich comparative analysis. How those routes were forged? In the process of character interpretation, which choices do artists mobilize? How does a foreign imaginary is updated in migratory experiences of Brazilian artists living in Manhattan? Thus, I intend to discuss the route of both subjects and content of musical theater between these cities. I am particularly preoccupied in understand how does perceptions about difference (such as gender, race, sexuality, class and generation) are triggered and contextually mobilized.
