Abstract

This project aims at the synthesis and structural characterization of biocompatible glasses, before and after heat treatment at different temperatures in order to obtain glass ceramics based on SiO2-Na2O-CaO-P2O5 system doped with Fe2O3 and Gd2O3. The incorporation of dopants aims at obtaining crystals with magnetic properties. The temperature of nucleation of nucleated crystals will be identified by differential scanning calorimetry, while the crystalline phases will be identified by x-ray diffraction, average crystal size will be determined by Williamson-Hall relationship. The glass structure will be characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The morphology of the glass and the dispersion of nucleated crystals will be observed by scanning electron microscopy. In future magnetic characterization of these materials will be performed by Biomaterials Research Group Functional, Regenerative Medicine and Biotechnology (BioMMR). The results obtained in this research will be converged with data magnetization to determine which nucleated phases contribute effectively to the magnetization of the samples, compared with literature data to see if crystals in the Fe2O3-Gd2O3 system contribute more significantly than single Fe2O3 crystals.
