Abstract

The integrated production systems such as crop-livestock integration (CLI) and crop-livestock-forest integration (CLFI) can intensify agricultural, livestock and forestry production, without adversely affecting the environment. In contrast, there is a long way to go to improve the management of these systems for different biomes. Indicators of soil quality (SQ), with emphasis on soil organic matter (SOM) are key tools in the evaluation and improvement of conservationist systems of land use, since they have quick responses to management and they integrate various environmental factors. In studies so far conducted in CLI and CLFI the root system (RS) of the gender Urochloa sp. used for grazing, has been nominated as one of the most responsible for improving indicators of SQ attributes. Such considerations were predominantly elaborated without scientific evidence, considering that they have not studied the root system quantitatively or qualitatively. In the experimental area of the Embrapa Pecuária Sudeste (São Carlos/SP) four areas will be assessed: natural vegetation of semi-deciduous seasonal forest (NV); extensive pasture (EP); CLI and CLFI. The analyzes for the characterization of SOM will be conducted through the particle size fractionation and the quantification of light organic matter in water (LOM). The production and decomposition of roots will be evaluated with the aid of minirhizotrons installed in the field, and images of the RS obtained every 14 days. Monitoring will be for a period of 17 months in integrated systems, including maize cultivation, growth and pasture establishment, and this subsequently being used with grazing for a year. In parallel will be determined physical and chemical soil properties to evaluate the SQ and complement the understanding of the dynamics of SOM and SR of the evaluated species. The best system of soil management and the best indicators of SQ will be selected by multivariate analysis. (AU)
